Gifts of Loving Care

Today, and every day, let us remind ourselves that God, the Creator, is with every life that has been created: with people, but also with plants, with trees, and with the world, itself.

Butterflies, seemingly so fragile, are blessed that they are able to cross great distances in their need for warmth in winter.

Squirrels, through deep winters, find protection from the cold with dens they have made inside trees, dens, they fill with pods that hold seeds.

In a way, we less active Senior folks have discovered that our minds find for us activity to enjoy in our days. Often memories present themselves for us to share, and laughter comes along to play.

God, in order that lives will find their sustenance, and the seasons will follow their order, maintains the planet in its journey around the sun.

For life and for Your Care, Creator of all,
we are blessed.

Jesus Listened

My attention and thought
were recently
called again to the fact
that Jesus listened
to people.

Jesus listened to a woman,
even one, who had no stature.

Reverend Deborah O'Connor
added that after Jesus listened,
he disclosed to the woman
how she was already empowered
to deal with her circumstance.

God empowers us and
all life at the time
of our conception.
a life is already in the seed
whether the life is a plant
or a human life.

Confidence in our Creator

Are we the only specie that
worries and frets
about foreboding things
that may happen. How sad.

Shame on us if we miss the
glory of life
we can find in each day
right where we are.

Recently,
I read a story
whose lesson for us was,
"This, too, shall pass."

Might the word "this"
stand for Worry or
trials that
come into our lives?

Our confidence
As that of Nature,
is safe in the Creator
of all that is good.

With assurance,
we can sing with joy:

Where He leads me, I will follow.
Where He leads me I will follow.
Where He leads me, I will follow.
I'll go with Him, with Him,
all the way.

Every day, I put my hand
and my safety,
into the hand of God.
I really do.

To Find Truth

I don't know your thoughts on matters of the Spirit. I, myself, don't look for an invisible giver of life, and say, "Prove to me, your existence! Prove it right this minute!

I take a different path to find Truth. I watch all of nature. I also watch the rhythm of life: the earth's movement around the sun to bring our seasons, the turning of the planet for day and for night, the rhythm of waves moving forward and falling back, the feeling of seasons within myself, a growing time, and a "holding on time".

I am amazed at the arrival of robins around March 1st, and the arrival of earthworms, as well. (My adult grandson Stephen, as a young child, and Kelly, an older child, for several years, confirmed in early March, the arrival of worms atop the soil.)

Three creations I observe are trees, dandelions in my yard, in abundance, and my rhododendron bush that is outside my front window.

Over the years, I have watched those outdoor lives and their activity. I watch how each life reacts to weather, and to the seasons. So many lives come from a seed that no human person has had to open.

A dandelion beside a barn, may grow three feet high. and in a lawn, a dandelion will flower just above the grass, and between mowings. A dandelion seed landed once in a dish garden that I brought inside.

When the dandelion's season arrived in the outdoors, the new season's arrival woke seeds under ground and the one in my dish garden, too! Dandelions bloomed outdoors and inside my house..

Inner guidance for a time to grow, comes to outdoor life and to us indoor (and outdoor) folk, too. As lives outdoors, we are given thoughts, and ideas or action to take to meet challenge that comes..

I don't know whether dandelions or trees know the joy of seeing sunrise or sunset, or see the jewels of dew on the morning grass (that predict a clear day ahead) .

Nature's children, however, surely know how to flower and that is the expectation for us, as well.

We don't have to ask for thoughts to meet the demands of our day. Thoughts flow to us as freely as water down a hill.

People will often say, "It just dawned on me to do thus and so." The dawning that we all experience is spiritual. Dawning, hope, and joy cannot be made of anything material.

Those experiences of wonder, even amidst storms, bring me peace in my days and into my life.

A New Year

As the old year draws to a close how do our thoughts
regard the new year that will arrive on January 1st, 2009.?.

In the world, we, no doubt, think first of anguish,
and the turmoil of war.

In our country we think of anguish, too, in the lack of work, the loss of homes, and in the deprivation those losses bring..

Where do each one of us, as well as those in deepest need, find hope? What will the future bring?

Alexander Pope has said "Hope springs eternal in the human breast." Let us dare to hope for a time when all people, wherever they live in the world, will find release from anguish, and from need.

In 1993, at William Clinton's Inaugural, to become the President of the United States, a song, "Be Not Afraid" was part of the service.

I feel the message of "Be not afraid" speaks to us today. The words reassure us that, we, with spiritual help, and our combined effort, can hope to find harmony in the days ahead.

Love's Prayer

 DEAR Lord! kind Lord!
Gracious Lord! I pray
Thou wilt look on all I love,
Tenderly to-day!

Weed their hearts of weariness;
Scatter every care,
Down a wake of angel wings
Winnowing the air.

Bring unto the sorrowing
All release from pain;
Let the lips of laughter
Overflow again,

And with all the needy
 O divide, I pray,
This vast treasure of content
 That is mine to-day!

By James Whitcomb Riley

The late James Whitcomb Riley was a resident of my home state of Indiana. (Indiana is a word that refers to the local Indians.) With Google's help. I have learned that when Indiana was created from the Northwest Territory in 1800, "Indiana" was the name given to the Indiana Territory by the United States Congress.

Indiana is often referred to as the Hoosier state. James Whitcomb Riley is known as the Hoosier poet. Riley lived in Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana. Indianapolis is about 75 miles from my home town of Terre Haute, Indiana. Riley's birth date was October 7, 1849. He died in July 22, 1916.

Riley died before my birth, but I am thrilled that his poetry had been printed, and saved, I have enjoyed his poetry, and am glad that Riley was given acclaim as our Indiana poet. I admire Riley as a person of distinction. Also, because Riley's poems touch my heart, I love the gift of his thoughts as well.

I am "tickled pink" that at my elder age, my memory still holds for me, the words and music of Riley's hymn, "Love's Prayer" At home, sometimes, I sing hymns aloud with my 84 year-old voice. At other times, I sing hymns within my mind. In my mind, but without actual sound, somehow I "hear," the music.

If a reader would like to see if she or he can hear silent music, try singing a simple tune in your mind. Try:

Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.
*******

MY QUESTION FOR TODAY

"Life is but a dream?"
If that is true,
Have I, for all of these 84 years.
been walking in my sleep?

NIGHT TIME IN THE ADIRONDACKS

Sleep sweet within this Quiet room.
Let its Peace wash away
All the problems of tomorrow
and Fears of Yesterday.

Tall Pines are murmuring, soft and low--
"Wood Music" as you dream--
While at their feet, in rock and moss, --
The trickle of a stream.

From far away, faint Echoes toss
The Hermit Thrush's Lone cry.
Above the placid lakes, the stars
Keep watch as hours drift by.

At midnight mountain air stands still
O'er Forest Silence, deep --
As Heaven leans to kiss the Earth
And lulls the World to sleep.

So, close your eyes and be assured
Tomorrow will be Right.
The Heavenly Father's guarding you --
Sleep sweet! Goodnight! Goodnight!

A Psalm

O Lord, You are all to me.
You are my Protector
who keeps me from harm.

You are the Light
that guides my thought.

You are my Manna, and my Spring.
I am fed, and I do not thirst.

It is Your Voice that comforts me.
It is Your Love that completes me.

In gratitude, let me serve You
as You will.

FROM MY WINDOW

It is 7:33 in the morning. As I sit at my computer by the window, no cars and no fast-walking people, with their dogs, pass by. At 7:33 a.m., my mind, and for only a minute, ponders why..

"Ah ha! Today is Saturday and Saturday isn't a work day for some folks." Today, the cars must still be in their garages. The dog-walkers that I see most days, no doubt, are in their homes, and perhaps, asleep."

As I think about the word, "folks" I'm glad for it. Human beings might have been named "yolks." However, folks, sometimes, are called, (but not to their faces), "yokel", and to be exact, "country yokels."

Words, to me, are fun to think about. The word "some" came into my mind and gave me a word to play with.

How many people, or cars, or clouds, must there be for us to use the word "some" as in "some people" "some cars," or "some clouds"? Must we talk about more than two? I'll let any reader who stops by my Blog, ponder an answer.

I started to say "No sun has yet come into my yard", but I looked again. This time I was surprised to see the sun dancing about, not only in my trees, but even atop my yard!

Meanwhile, it's time for breakfast for Sammy, my 13 year-old beagle and me. I hope others have fun with words.

Usefulness

Thirty spokes share the wheel's hub;
It's the center hole that makes it useful.
Shape clay into a vessel;
It's the space within that makes it useful.
Cut doors and windows for a room;
It is the holes that make it useful.
Therefore profit comes from what is there;
Usefulness from what is not there.

FAITH

"Keep this for me."
What child has not said this,
And placed a treasure in his mother's hand
With strict injunction she should keep it safe
Til he return?
He knows with her it will be safe.
No troubled thought or anxious fear besets his mind.
And off he runs light-hearted to his play.

If children can so trust, why cannot we,
And place our treasures, too, in God's safe hand;
Our hopes, ambitions, needs, and those we love,
Just see them in His all embracing care,
And say with joyous heart,"They are with Thee."

God's Light

God, with the sun,
the moon,
and the stars,
sends us light.
light that we find
all around us.

God sends us light
we cannot see:
an inner light
that
leads us
in our days.

When we cherish
the good,
and if there is need,
God
guides our
love to others.

When Morning Breaks

"Please sing the refrain after the cantor,
and after each verse."

Refrain:
As morning breaks
I look to you,
I look to you, O Lord
to be my strength this day
As morning breaks.

For your love is better than life,
my lips will speak your praise.
So I will bless you all my life
In your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul shall be filled as with a banquet
my mouth shall praise you with joy.

Refrain:
As morning breaks
I look to you.
I look to you, O Lord
to be my strength this day
As morning breaks.

On my bed I remember you.
On you I muse through the night
for you have been my help
In the shadow of your wings, I rejoice.

GESTURES

All morning, in the company of my computer, and the Provider of all thought, I have pondered the matter of Gestures.

As I thought about gestures, I wondered, "What might we communicate with one hand? "

A thought came. "If we hold one hand up and hold it still, palm facing forward, that gesture means "STOP".

Before I go on, I wish to say that I am left-handed, a "Lefty", a "South Paw". Thus, if I want to communicate for someone to "stop", I hold up my left hand, with my palm facing out.

The question has come into my mind now, "Who ever determined that a left hand was a "south paw?"

Aha, I have now determined that if I face the West, my left side is found to be toward the South. So, too, is my left arm, my left hand, my left ear, and my left foot.

I wish now to ask other "lefties" to shout with me,"Hooray". At times the left foot is honored. When people in a parade march, each participant starts out on the left foot. Thus, the left foot gets to be a leader.

I use my left hand to write, to peel potatoes, to wash dishes, to carry a bag from the grocery, and for other tasks that haven't yet come to mind. I put a telephone receiver to my left ear.

Do each one of us hold up our dominant hand as a gesture to communicate information to others?

One caution: If one ever holds up a hand to stop a person from ranting, stand back from the "ire" you may raise. ( "Don't you put your hand in front of my face!)

Yet when our Crossing guard, Tim, holds up a red STOP sign before drivers,
not one driver objects.

Is the word STOP used on large red signs in other countries? Are all "Stop" signs, hexagonal in shape (? ) and that shape wherever in the world, those signs are found?

After thought
Luckily both of my hands, and the fingers on each hand work well. At the computer, my right hand moves the computer "mouse" for the times it has tasks to do. More often, my fingers on each hand, use the keys and write on the screen the thoughts that come to mind, and I treasure.
*******

As I note the thoughts above: I am reminded again that not one of us, including outdoor creatures, can "think up" a thought or an idea. But when there a need, as in times of hunger, times of cold, or times of emergencies, ideas come that bring relief.

Sometimes, we hunger to share ourselves with others. Our Gracious Creator is aware of such desire and sends thoughts and ideas for us human folk to share.

For now, a final thought has come. "It seems that in our conversations, our smiles, our warm-hearted greetings, and in the loving thoughts we hold for others, each of us provides a special kind of nurture. To that conviction, I am certain our Creator nods an assent.

God's Love

I look to Thee in Every Need
and never look in vain.
I feel Thy touch, Eternal Love

The thought of Thee is mightier far
Than sin and pain and sorrow are.

The Creator and Supply

In a 1988 letter, I wrote of the supply that the Creator provides for all that He has created. That Truth holds today and, I expect, will always be present.

At this moment, when I looked out my front window, I saw a "neighbor" at dinner. A squirrel, on a portion of my lawn from which the snow had melted, had found a morsel of food. A squirrel at dinner pleases me. I am reminded anew that God provides nourishment in food for outdoor ones as well as nourishment in thoughts and ideas for each of His created.

I may not know of the wonderful thoughts that our Creator has given to others. Nevertheless, God's supply for my needs, has been bountiful.

I am grateful to be on friendly terms with other lives whom The Creator has created: the trees, the wild creatures and the native plants; the skies, the stars, and the moon, too, in its rounds.

What a blessing it is, as 2008 arrives, to know that we, as all others of God's created, remain in the Creator's Presence and care.
