In earlier years, Mrs. Twila Baird, and her husband, the retired, Rev. Herbert Baird, shared many summer vacations in the Adirondacks with my retired husband, George Armour, and me. ( Rev. Herbert Baird, Mrs Twila Baird, and my husband George Armour are now deceased). Our families, by inheritance, held joint ownership of our Adirondack property.
One summer, Twila told me that a month earlier, she had given a talk to a group in her church about our beloved Adirondacks. She said she had shared stories with her audience about the natural wonders there were to enjoy during summer visits. She spoke of the mountains, the lakes, and the wild flowers. She told stories also, of the forest animals: the chipmunks, the raccoons, and the deer.
Twila told the group, "I will close with a quotation from a booklet called "In Awesome Wonder" It was written by one of our guest campers, June Hullin." ( June and her husband Gordon had spent several weeks in the Baird Guest cottage, and were friends of ours, as well.
Twila read from June's book, "Tomorrow I must leave this beautiful place. I always leave reluctantly, but I comfort myself in the knowledge that when I return, not one thing will have changed. The lake and the mountains will not have moved. The seagull circling noisily overhead, will still be here, and the cedar waxwings will still be darting from tree to tree, patiently waiting for the wild cherries to ripen."
"There is solace, " June had concluded "that in a rapidly changing world, some things, the basic things, will remain constant.
God has so ordained." - June Hullin

Hi Marylee,
Very beautiful musings!
"In Awesome Wonder" is a great example of a way to stay grounded while the world is going crazy around you.
I found this site while searching for Twila Baird.
I believe she may have been a relative of mine and I was hoping to communicate about her with you. Please email me at vh_resurrection@yahoo.com as this blog is not the place to discuss.
Thank you!
