Spring, even though late, has come
at last to mid-New York State,
and to the North.
Earthworms have appeared
on my driveway, and a robin
has come to my back yard.
The date is March 27th, 2007.
Some years robins
have arrived
from their winter homes
on March 1st.
I have seen
earthworms, too,
come from underground
on the same day.
Robins, earthworms,
even wild plants I believe
when it is time to to move north
or to wake from underground slumber
receive spiritual guidance to do so.
With spring's arrival, waking comes,
and we human folk, in the new season,
also find renewed energy in our activity.

A RULE MY MOTHER GAVE ME:
Mother called the rule a way to get items
where they belong; then when needed,
such items can be found
Mother said,
"When you have something in your hand,
take the item to the place where it ultimately
belongs, whether to a kitchen drawer, a counter,
or a closet.
That rule is so ingrained in my mind
that even today, each time I carry something
from here to there, whether it is a
a pair of shears to be put into a drawer
or discards to a bin for trash day,
the old rule urges me on.

A HAND-ME-DOWN JOKE
Two friends, an older man and an older woman
were at lunch.
In conversation, the man said to the woman,
"You know, Tillie, it's about time that we start to
think about the "here-after."
Tillie answered, "I think about that often."
He said, with disbelief, "You do?!
She said, "Yes." " Every time I go to another room,
I say to myself "What am I here after?"
