As I sat at the computer earlier today, my beagle Sammy, put his paw on my back. He wishes to remind me of his presence. He may be hungry or he may want to go outdoors. Sammy has his own communication skills. He expresses his glad feelings with a wagging tail. He greets me and others with a bouncy welcome of joy.
Sammy communicates only for himself. I have never seen Sammy seek to convert any other dog to his way of thinking or behaving. I have never seen Sammy show even one other dog how to wag its tail. When Sammy meets other dogs, however, he is always friendly and outgoing. Other dogs respond to Sammy in the same manner. (no snarling).
Sammy appears to live in the moment. When he sleeps, he sleeps. When he's outside, he explores. As far as I know, he does not concern himself with the future. He greets every dog, even those who are unknown to him, with cordiality. Perhaps that is one reason why the dog has a name so close to that of his Maker. Dog, of course is God spelled backwards.
I don't know whether Sammy counts his blessings, but when I come home after a time away, Sammy not only wags his tail but dances! With such a greeting I feel welcomed and loved!
