In 1950,the Church, to which I belonged, held an Antique Sale. The sale was
held to benefit the church and also members who had antiques they wished to sell. For each sale made, the church received a percentage of the profit,
During Friday afternoon and evening, before the sale the next day, church members brought in antiques that they hoped to sell. Standing antiques and tables with antiques filled the large Fellowship Hall.
In the afternoon, a member finished a large sign and placed it in front of the church, close to the sidewalk. The printing was large enough for people who drove by, to learn of the sale that would be held the next day.
The sign said, "Antique Sale tomorrow." Come early for the best selection!
My older neighbor and another church member of the same age, and I, at age 26, agreed to set up cots in the church so we could guard the antiques overnight.
The church creaked so loudly all night that we got very little sleep. But the next day, the sale was a big success. That night, the guardians of the antiques the previous night found sleep early and welcome.
In 2007, would three older women volunteer to sleep in the church to guard antiques overnight?
Today, if antiques were set up in a church, overnight, and someone came for those antiques and for no price, we three would probably find ourselves helping to load the trucks.
